Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21) issued the following statement following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address:

“I will work with the President and anyone of any party who will bring solutions to the table that will benefit North Country families and businesses. For too long Washington has been divided and has not been serving the will of the American people and it is time to turn the page.

“I am happy that in the House of Representatives, we have already moved forward this Congress with several bipartisan measures to help veterans, families and businesses. We have also passed legislation to approve the Keystone pipeline – a bipartisan project that my predecessor Congressman Bill Owens supported that will create jobs and help lower energy prices for Americans across the country.

“There is much more work to be done. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I want to work to stop the sequestration cuts to the Department of Defense and work to ensure that Fort Drum is protected and strengthened. And as a member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, I want to work to improve access to high quality education and pursue policies to make sure our labor force is ready to compete in a 21st century global economy.

“I hope that the President will work with Congress on behalf of the American people. Americans are tired of divisive politics and sent a clear message in the last election that they want us to work together, solve problems, and protect the future of our nation.

“I was proud to have Katie and Mary McCurry of Carthage High School join me as my guests tonight. These two twin sisters are seniors in high school who plan to serve their nation by enrolling in a U.S. Military Service Academy upon graduation. They are an inspiration and a reminder of the importance of the work I am here to do. I look forward to doing everything I can to protect their American Dream.”
