Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is a cosponsor of the bipartisan Promoting Alzheimer’s Awareness to Prevent Elder Abuse Act, legislation to protect seniors living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The bill directs the Department of Justice to develop a slate of best practices law enforcement, firefighters, emergency personnel, and medical professionals who encounter and care for those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Knowing specific best practices will help these professionals effectively interact with people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia who are experiencing a health crisis, may have been targeted by fraud, or are in need of general care. This is especially important during the COVID-19 crisis.
“Our North Country seniors, especially those living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, are particularly vulnerable during a public health pandemic,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “Unfortunately, bad actors have taken advantage of the COVID-19 crisis and are preying on seniors in form of scams. Those with Alzheimer’s or dementia have a much more difficult time communicating crimes committed against them to law enforcement, and this legislation will ensure EMS personnel have the necessary tools and resources to help this vulnerable population. The North Country is home to one of the largest constituencies of seniors in the country – working on policy proposals to protect and support them is always a top priority.”
