This Week in Washington
On Monday, I announced that the Department of Transportation has selected SkyWest Airlines Inc. to provide weekly, nonstop, round trip flights from Ogdensburg International Airport (OGS) to Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD). I have long advocated for increased funding for the Essential Air Service (EAS) program during every appropriations season, as it provides critical funding for rural airports and allows smaller communities like those in the North Country to access the national air transportation system. Additionally, I sent a letter of support on behalf of Sky West as the preferred EAS provider for Ogdensburg Airport. The DOT will provide more than $14 million in federal funds over the next three years to ensure these critical services remain in the North Country.
North Country farmers have long advocated for a stable, reliable workforce to address their labor needs, and I have supported reforms to our broken H-2A system since my first term in Congress. I am proud to cosponsor this bipartisan bill once again – we need legislation that modernizes our agriculture labor program and provides clarity for our agricultural workforce.

Specifically, this bill would:

  • Establish a mandatory, nationwide E-Verify system for all agricultural employment with a structured phase-in and guaranteed due process for authorized workers

  • Reform the H-2A program to provide more flexibility for farmers and agricultural employers, while ensuring critical protections for workers.

  • Provide access to the H-2A program for industries with year-round labor needs, including dairy

The COVID-19 virus that has taken more than 500,000 American lives and crippled our economy may have originated in the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. It is absolutely unacceptable for American taxpayer dollars to be funding the lab and any Chinese Communist Party entities, period.

From 2015-2019, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where the COVID-19 virus may have originated from, received approximately $598,500 from EcoHealth Alliance. The Defund EcoHealth Alliance Act would prohibit EcoHealth Alliance from receiving federal funding and requires the General Accountability Office to write a report on funds awarded in the previous 10-year period that were funneled to Chinese entities.
