Saratoga, NY – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has cosponsored legislation to require that the Biden Administration provides transparency on efforts to reopen the U.S. – Canada border. The legislation, led by Rep. Chris Jacobs (NY-27), would require the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, and the Centers for Disease Control to produce a report within 30 days of enactment. The report would be transmitted to relevant committees in the House of Representatives and the Senate and must include all information regarding efforts to reopen the U.S. – Canada border.
“For several months, I have repeatedly called on the United States and Canada to establish a bilateral, metrics-based plan to reopen our northern border. I have heard from countless community leaders, small businesses, and families who have been increasingly frustrated by the monthly extensions and lack of meaningful signs of collaboration or progress. This bill would require the Biden Administration to be transparent with Northern Border communities regarding their efforts to develop a concrete plan for reopening.”
Last week, Congresswoman Stefanik sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Mayorkas urging DHS to unilaterally ease restrictions for non-essential travel across the northern border if a bilateral reopening plan is not established before current restrictions expire on June 21, 2021.
In January, Congresswoman Stefanik led a bipartisan letter to President Biden outlining specific actions his administration should take to safely reopen the northern border.
