Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

"Today, we celebrate the life of Dr. King and remember what he courageously stood for.

"In his 1963 “I Have a Dream Speech,” Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed the nation and spoke of his dream to see America transformed to a nation of freedom and equality for all. This speech inspired our nation to make great strides, and his honorable work to secure civil rights and equal opportunity for all Americans remains more important than ever.

"Today, as we reflect the legacy of Dr. King, I am so proud of our region’s history and its contribution to the fight for civil rights. Brave North Country men and women founded abolition societies around our region and developed the Champlain Line of the Underground Railroad, helping pave the way for an America that celebrates freedom – the America that Dr. King dreamed about. I am thankful for their service and especially for the leadership of Dr. King."
