Joining Fox and Friends to Talk About Governor Cuomo’s Failed Nursing Home Policy
This morning, I appeared on Fox and Friends to discuss the bipartisan calls for an independent investigation into Governor Cuomo’s catastrophic nursing home tragedy. These failed policies led to massive loss of life and have left many grieving families in the North Country and across New York. I will continue to push for an investigation into the way that the state of New York mismanaged nursing home and assisted living facilities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Watch here and above.
Participating in 2nd Nexstar COVID-19 Virtual Town Hall Tonight
I will be participating in the 2nd virtual town hall focused on COVID-19 tonight at 7PM. The virtual town hall will be broadcast on Nexstar stations across Upstate New York, including WTEN, WWTI, WVNY, and WFFF in the North Country. It will be livestreamed on News10.com. Also participating in the town hall will be my colleagues from Upstate New York, including Rep. Katko, Rep. Tonko, Rep. Brindisi, Rep. Reed, Rep. Higgins, and Rep. Morrelle. Read more here.
Introducing Bill Supporting State and Local Funding
This week, I introduced the bipartisan State and Municipal Assistance for Recovery and Transition (SMART) Fund, legislation that would provide support to state and local governments in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill will provide $500 billion in emergency funding to every state, county and community in the country, while prioritizing assistance to the areas with the greatest need. After a $16 billion set-aside for Native American tribal governments, the remaining funding would be allocated to states through three equally divided tranches, based on population size, infection rates, and revenue losses. The additional federal support eliminates the current 500,000 resident population threshold, allowing every state, county, municipality, U.S. territory and the District of Columbia to qualify for direct federal assistance, regardless of its size. Companion legislation will be introduced by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) in the Senate. Our North Country communities have been working diligently to address this public health crisis, and they need help. I have spoken with local elected officials from across the district, many of whom have faced severe revenue shortages as a result of the shutdown. The SMART Fund will provide direct, flexible assistance to our local governments and municipalities to help them get back on their feet. I will continue to work with my colleagues in a bipartisan fashion in order to ensure that our communities continue to receive critical support throughout this crisis and beyond. Read more here.
Securing Over $108,000 for Local Family Practice
I have secured $108,064 in HRSA Cares Act Provider Relief for the Irongate Family Practice in Glens Falls, New York. Irongate Family Practice had applied for the HRSA funding and were not receiving any response from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). I reached out to HHS leadership to elevate and expedite Irongate’s application. HHS was able to resolve the issue and provide the funds to Irongate due to my advocacy. Our local family practices are in need of immediate federal relief due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My office was able to reach out directly to HHS to identify the needs of this specific practice and expedite and secure their payment. I will continue to advocate and elevate concerns of our local hospitals, community health centers, and individual family practices as they navigate this difficult financial situation. As always, I encourage healthcare practices and others experiencing difficulties in receiving payments to reach out to my office and we will work with you directly. Read more here.
Cosponsoring Legislation to Protect Those Living with Alzheimer’s from Scams and Elder Abuse
I am a cosponsor of the bipartisan Promoting Alzheimer’s Awareness to Prevent Elder Abuse Act, legislation to protect seniors living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The bill directs the Department of Justice to develop a slate of best practices law enforcement, firefighters, emergency personnel, and medical professionals who encounter and care for those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Knowing specific best practices will help these professionals effectively interact with people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia who are experiencing a health crisis, may have been targeted by fraud, or are in need of general care. This is especially important during the COVID-19 crisis. Our North Country seniors, especially those living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, are particularly vulnerable during a public health pandemic. Unfortunately, bad actors have taken advantage of the COVID-19 crisis and are preying on seniors in form of scams. Those with Alzheimer’s or dementia have a much more difficult time communicating crimes committed against them to law enforcement, and this legislation will ensure EMS personnel have the necessary tools and resources to help this vulnerable population. The North Country is home to one of the largest constituencies of seniors in the country – working on policy proposals to protect and support them is always a top priority. Read more here.
