Stefanik Sends Letter to USDA Requesting Increased Fruit and Vegetable Purchases in SNAP Program
Saratoga, NY – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi and Leader McCarthy requesting that Congress provide USDA with $51 million to expand USDA’s match capability for the Gus Schumaker Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP). This program incentivizes fruit and vegetable purchases by providing SNAP recipients a match in benefits. The letter requests that USDA be provided funds to both decrease the required non-federal match funding for the program, in order to utilize it for the GusNIP program, and also allow for greater fruit and vegetable purchases.
“SNAP and other USDA feeding programs have been stretched thin as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, during a time of exponential need for our communities,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I am requesting that House leadership provide USDA with supplemental funds in order to help feed families in our communities, and also allow greater capacity for local fruit and vegetable purchases to help our farmers who have been impacted by supply chain disruptions. I will continue to advocate for our North Country communities through funding for projects like these that will have significant impact.”
