Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is calling on U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to immediately find a temporary unit for the residents of Wells, NY and Hamilton County while the post office in Wells remains closed. The post office has been closed since May 24, 2021, forcing residents to make a 30-mile round trip every time they need to send or get their mail. Congresswoman Stefanik has been working with USPS to resolve this issue for her constituents.
“It is unacceptable that the residents of Wells and Hamilton County are being forced to make long drives just to send or receive their mail,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I have heard from numerous constituents, and I have raised concerns for months about the lack of a post office in Wells. It is especially concerning for those who need access to prescriptions by mail and have had to make the trek during treacherous weather conditions in the Adirondacks. I am urging the U.S. Postmaster General to find a viable temporary solution until the office can reopen. The Postal Service is a critical component of our infrastructure, especially in our rural areas, and the continued lack of a post office is a complete disservice to residents in the rural areas of the North Country.”
Last month, Congresswoman Stefanik spoke directly to Nick Mauro, the Wells Town Supervisor, about the importance of resolving this issue. The Congresswoman’s office, along with the office of Senator Jim Tedisco, has been following up with Hamilton County Chairman Bill Farber on the issue, as well as requesting updates from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and the USPS’s district offices in the hopes of coming to a resolution.
