Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik voted to advance the bipartisan Prison Camera Reform Act (S. 2899) to address critical deficiencies in the surveillance and communication equipment used in federal prisons.
Specifically, the Prison Camera Reform Act would direct the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to evaluate the condition of its security and communications equipment and implement a plan to address any deficiencies discovered during the evaluation. The BOP would then have three years to fully implement these improvements.
“New York’s 21st District is home to many brave correctional officers, and I am proud to support and advance legislation to give our federal correctional officers one more tool to increase their safety on the job," Stefanik said. “Outdated and inadequate equipment, including security cameras, radios, and public address devices, jeopardize the safety of the nation’s correctional officers and make it more difficult for investigators to substantiate incidents of misconduct. This bipartisan legislation will address critical deficiencies, so officers, who put their lives on the line daily, have the support they need.”
