Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Representing the 21st District of New York

Health Care

Congresswoman Stefanik believes we need to reform healthcare with common sense solutions to lower costs, improve quality and increase accessibility for North Country families. This includes protecting those with pre-existing conditions; allowing families and businesses to shop for insurance across state lines; pursuing real tort reform; fighting the waste, fraud and abuse that costs our health care system billions each year; and allowing individuals and families to purchase insurance on the same tax-advantaged basis as businesses.

Health Care Reform Legislation

Congresswoman Stefanik has a strong record when it comes to working in a bipartisan fashion on healthcare, including writing the largest fix to Obamacare last Congress that was signed into law by President Obama -- the repeal of the auto-enrollment mandate.

Throughout the legislative process and debate on the future of healthcare, Congresswoman Stefanik fought for a patient-centered approach to ensure those with pre-existing conditions were protected.

She also co-authored legislation that passed the House unanimously to ensure that Members of Congress and their staffs would abide by the same rules as everyone else.

Advancing the Healthcare Needs of Our District

Congresswoman Stefanik introduced the Community Health Investment, Modernization and Excellence (CHIME) Act of 2017, to extend the Community Health Centers Fund for five years. Federally Qualified Community Health Centers like Hudson Headwaters, North Country Family Health, and the Community Health Center of the North Country provide over 95,000 people in the North Country with critical healthcare and preventative services, and it’s important to the needs of our community that this funding be extended. The overwhelming bipartisan support for CHIME was instrumental in passing legislation in the House to extend the Community Health Center Fund for two years.

Congresswoman Stefanik is also a strong advocate for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that supports over 21,000 children in our district. She has consistently voted to reauthorize this bipartisan program.

Additionally, Congresswoman Stefanik is a strong advocate for the rural healthcare needs. She is a supporter of the 340b prescription drug program that is used by constituents across our district. She also is a cosponsor of H.R. 1955, the Rural Hospital Access Act – bipartisan legislation to ensure that funding is secured on a permanent basis for Medicare Dependent and Low-Volume hospitals, an important issue for rural hospitals in our region.

In 2016, Congresswoman Stefanik helped pass the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act – bipartisan legislation she cosponsored to reform the federal mental health system. This legislation was signed into law by President Obama.

Congresswoman Stefanik is committed to continuing to work with her colleagues on legislation to build a healthcare system that lowers costs, improves quality, and increases access for North Country families.
