WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21), House Republican Leadership Chair, applauded the U.S. Army's consideration of Fort Drum to house new microreactors, as part of the critical Janus Program, to support American national defense and create generational jobs in New York.
"Fort Drum’s strategic importance is a cornerstone of our national defense, and no military base is better positioned to lead the country into the next generation of secure, resilient, and reliable energy than the home of NY21’s 10th Mountain Division. And as Kathy Hochul continues to kneecap New York's energy dominance and surrender our grid's reliability to her Green New Scam, housing the Janus nuclear reactor program at Fort Drum will be paramount to ensuring energy reliability and the operational readiness of the installation,” said Stefanik.
"Fort Drum is already the largest employer in New York’s 21st district. Its skilled workforce has decades of experience managing on-site power, thanks to years of successfully operating its biomass facility, and stands ready to support and sustain America’s most-advanced microreactor technology. I applaud the Army’s consideration of Fort Drum for the next step of its Janus Program, and I strongly urge Secretary Driscoll to designate it as one of the site’s for our nation’s next-generation microreactors. This investment will not only enhance national security but also support generational jobs for New Yorkers, provide long-term energy resilience at Fort Drum, and the ensure the continued success of one of the most important military installations in our country.” she concluded.
Last October, Stefanik and Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R-NY) sent a letter to then-Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth advocating for the Army to host a small modular reactor (SMR) at Fort Drum.
